These Nordic Gods are instead associated with a secondary legendary permanent of great power, which takes the flip side of the double-faced card whose front represents the God itself, for the player to choose the mode they deem best according to the circumstances. Furthermore, these two disparate elements are brought together in a single model, resulting in divinities that lack indestructibility or any other way to survive death, in keeping with the traditional view of Viking gods as perishable just like any mortal. The only opportunity cost is a slight adjustment to the mana to play more swamps / Urborgs over fastlands and other utility lands. The Norse mythology-inspired world of Kaldheim features two major mechanical returns: the modal double-faced cards introduced in Zendikar Rising, and the third assembling of a family of Gods after the two that populated the pantheons of the planes of Theros and Amonkhet. BBE because it's just good value regardless of the combo. Black fetches to amplify the likelihood of turn 4 Witch's Cottage. Wrenn and Liliana to get your Valki into the grave if the opponent won't do it for you. Turn 1 discard to remove counterspells for the Tibalt. This slides into Jund so well because you're already playing 90% of the cards that the combo works well with. Then if you untap with Tibalt, you go +2 every turn thereafter and outvalue whatever Uro or Jace engine they're messing with. Any way you slice it, you're getting a 4 mana 4-for-1 (+1 for BBE, +1 for Tibalt, and +2 from either of his abilities) that adds a ton of board presence. On turn 4, you get a 5 loyalty, 7 CMC (Skyclave Appiration-proof, forces Ugin suicide) Planeswalker that goes up to 7 loyalty to draw 2 cards or down to 2 loyalty to exile and draw into any creature or artifact, plus a 3/2 haster to pressure the opponent's life and planeswalkers or protect Tibalt. Then turn 4 you play an untapped Witch's Cottage to put Valki on top, then cast Bloodbraid Elf to cascade into Tibalt. If you don't have access to Liliana you can even use Valki's 1 toughness to your advantage and use your own Wrenn to kill it. What you do play Valki turn 2 against decks that will likely kill it and pitch it to Liliana on turn 3 against decks that won't. There's even no equivalent of Choke or Boil that punishes you for playing Swamps, so it's really close to a free addition. Well ] exists, and turning that on turn 4 is even easier since black has Urborg. We know now that turning on Mystic Sanctuary on turn 4 is no problem in Modern at all. With that out of the way, here's why I think this card will break Jund. Even 6 mana ones like Elspeth, Sun's Champion are way too slow! 7 mana planeswalkers that can't be cast off Tron are similarly unplayable. Dark Confidant used to be the premier black creature of the format but Wrenn and Six and Lava Dart have turned that card into a joke, and Valki is much worse than Dark Confidant. But first why I think the card is subpar outside of cascade shenanigans:Ģ mana X/1s that need to stick around are really awful right now. Not because the card is good in the current Modern meta by its own merits, but because WotC didn't futureproof the cascade mechanic at all. This card could completely revitalize Jund back into a tier 1 deck. Not saying that Jund will take over the metagame but is there something here?Īnyone have any ideas on cool ways to use this? Also possible to buy back the planeswalker from the graveyard to hand using ]. If I'm not mistaken it's possible to cascade in to Valki using cards like ] or ] and then cast Tibalt. What does interest me however is the cards interaction with abilities like cascade. ![]() Tibalt does however cost like a million to cast, 7 is not really a mana cost that the rakdos colors are that interested in. Exile removal is always welcome, especially considering Uro, and when you do you can then play the card yourself. The Valki side of the card is a worse ] or ] but with slightly better stats, and an ability that could be value if one manage to exile a high impact creature, perhaps Uro. add RRR.Ī sweet design but not really something one would consider for modern. +2: Exile the top card of each player's library. Valki becomes a copy of that creature.Īs Tibalt enters the battlefield, you get an emblem with "You may play cards exiled with Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor, and you may spend mana as though it were mana of any color to cast those spells." X: Choose a creature card exiled with Valki with converted mana cost X. For each opponent, exile a creature card they revealed this way until Valki leaves the battlefield. When Valki enters the battlefield, each opponent reveals their hand.
